Recently – I made a video entitled ‘ZJ, I Don’t Think You Deserve Hell’. What I thought was a quick and simple reply turned into quite a fire storm.
The argument I put forth in the video is I don’t think anyone deserves eternal punishment, but that God knows better than I do, and if says Hell is just and necessary, then I accept His decision as the right decision.
Some people seemed to get it. Some seemed to be outraged that I could believe in a God I disagreed with…
Didn’t Abraham disagree with God when it came to the destruction of Sodom and Gamorrah? Didn’t Jeremiah protest when God wanted him to speak out against the nation of Israel? Even Jesus disagreed with the Father when it came time for His crucifixion. But the key for all of these men was no matter how they disagreed, no matter how they didn’t see or understand His plan, they would submit and God’s will be done. Faith doesn’t necessarily mean that we agree with God at all times… but it does mean we submit to His will regardless of what our own feeble minds might think is right.
There were some who thought that I was somehow dismissing the fact that God has decreed that people do deserve Hell. Perish the thought! I understand and submit to the Lord’s will… its just my own limited and failing judgement that would abolish Hell. I am sure if God were to eliminate Hell there would be consequences I do not see or understand that would jeopardize everything that all this is about. I submit to His will – even if I don’t agree or understand it.
The only thing I can conclude about the need for Hell comes from the following passage…
Galatians 5
7You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth? 8That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. 9“A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.”
If evil were allowed to co-exist with righteousness, it would infect it.
Why not destroy it? Perhaps the answer lies in the first law of thermodynamics which suggests that energy can not be created or destroyed. Maybe it comes down to evil having to be stored away in it’s own location apart from goodness?
Who knows. These are my own pitiful attempts to understand something thats way over my head… but it’s interesting none-the-less. What I believe is we all deserve Hell by God’s Holy Standards… its only through my own human ignorance that I find the heart to speak against it.
